Unplugged: 10 Tech-Free Things to Do On Fall Break

Can you believe that fall is already here? It feels like just yesterday, we were reposting funny photoshopped images of Bernie Sanders with his mittens from Inauguration Day, and now, here we are, buying new mittens of our own in preparation for the chilly season.

A lot has taken place in the last year or so, and while it’s important to continue to push through the good and bad, it’s also important that we recognize the value of rest and preservation. We’re surrounded by technology that makes it possible to stay in contact with… well, everyone. It also allows others to feel as if they have instant access to you. Technology has taken over the world, but it doesn’t have to consume you.

With that being said, taking some time to disconnect every once in a while is a form of practicing self-care. Here are 10 things you can do over fall break that are tech-free, and will give you some much-needed time to decompress and rejuvenate in time to get back to business.

  • Go on a hike. What’s better than getting some fresh air? Getting fresh air surrounded by the hues of autumn, of course! Tennessee has some amazing views during this time of year. Pack a bag, dress comfortably, and get out to see the world! Here’s a starter list of Tennessee's best trails if you happen to be local!

  • Read a new book. Or an old one--I won’t be picky--because actual, physical books are still very much a thing! Reading is a great way to exercise your brain, and get your creative juices flowing, and inspire you in unexpected ways.

  • Plan a picnic. The weather is quickly changing--so take advantage of it while you can! There are tons of great menu ideas on Pinterest that are easy to follow. Grab a nice blanket and fill a basket with your favorite goodies!

  • Explore a new hobby. You know that activity you’ve never tried, that you’ve always wanted to try? Uhm, yeah. The time is now!

  • Revisit an old hobby. Look deep into your closet and grab those old skates and hit a rink or take those old boxing gloves to a gym! You deserve to tap into your inner-child and do something for yourself.

  • Book a massage. I’m not talking about one of those kiosks in the mall. Call an actual massage therapist and book yourself an appointment. You’ll feel so relaxed and wish you would’ve done it sooner.

  • Host a game night. This is one of my favorite things to do! Whip up a tasty meal or yummy snacks and have a full-on Gamer Tournament. Who will be defeated? Who will reign as the victor until the next showdown? We love checkers, Life, Culture Tag, and Uno. There are plenty of other games to match your crowd.

  • Have a paint party. The term “party” may be a stretch, because this can easily be a solo endeavor. However, painting supplies are pretty standard, and you can get them just about anywhere. Must haves would be a canvas, paint brushes and of course, paint. You’ll also want a picture to serve as inspiration. You can even incorporate a nice theme and “craft” you up a really great date night!

  • Declutter. Your home is your safe haven; take care of your mental health by taking care of your home! Studies have shown that by taking time to declutter things like shelves and countertops in your home can help soothe your senses and help prevent sensory overload. Get rid of what you don’t need. Give everything else a “place,” then, get in a habit of putting things back where they belong.

  • Brainstorm new ideas. Take the time to reflect on this past year and plan out your vision for the last couple of months of 2021! We love a good New Year resolution, but who said you have to wait? Plan now and start today!

Honorable Mentions:

  • Re-pot your houseplants

  • Write

  • Try a new recipe

  • Attend a yoga class

  • Volunteer

  • Make it a full-day thing and pair a few of the ideas together!

I hope you were inspired to “unplug” for a while. Relieving yourself from the constant access that comes from technology is (sometimes) a blessing and a curse. A quick mental getaway for some downtime can be what you need in order to reflect, relax, and recoup!
